I’ve found a great web hosting company that gives you a free domain name for life when you buy a web hosting package from them. When you consider that a .co.uk domain costs around £3 per year and a .com £10, a free domain for life is well worth having. Once you’ve registered your domain you need web hosting for your WordPress blog, again you can get this very cheaply but in my experience you really do get what you pay for and as a beginner blogger I definitely recommend a company that offers a one-click WordPress install. It really is as easy as clicking one button and this avoids you having to setup your own MySQL database and uploading the WordPress installation – both of which can be quite difficult for a beginner. I managed it but only with the help of an excellent book Wordpress 2 (Visual QuickStart Guides) and if you are going it alone I heartily recommend you buy it.
The web hosting company I recommend are called Super Green Hosting and there’s a mulititude of reasons to set up your blog with them, not least of which is that they offer environmentally friendly web hosting. So not only do you get a free domain for life, one-click WordPress install, unlimited hosting space, unlimited email addresses and free Goggle AdWords credits, you get to do your bit for the environment as they are 100% carbon neutral. And they offer 24/7 support just in case!
At the time of writing this their hosting is on special offer at a very competitive £3.95 per month so visit Super Green Hosting and set up your blog. Once I’d set up my blog I then started to look around for a quality WordPress theme because although the WordPress install comes with a standard theme it is hugely lacking in functionality, never mind design. It doesn’t even have navigation elements on the post pages so no sooner have you clicked in to an article and you’re lost forever! I’ve found some really good sources for well designed, elegant WordPress themes which I’ll tell you all about in part 3 of my How To Build A Blog series: Finding a good quality WordPress theme. So today, register your domain and set up your hosting and tomorrow check back for part 3.
