To make money from your blog, a blog doesn’t run itself

September 14, 2009

Running a blog takes hard work, especially in the early stages, and making a good level of income from your blog isn’t as easy as you might think.

Ignoring the basic challenges of having to post entries regularly and finding ways to ensure that you increase traffic to your blog, there is plenty of other work that needs to be done to assure a blog remains “fit for purpose.”

You could get by for a while ignoring things like broken links or out of date postings but not for long in reality.

Few people will persist with a blog or website which has broken links and looks unkempt. If you really want to keep your blog healthy, vibrant and running smoothly to give it the best chance of increasing traffic and earning money, then you really need to think about setting up some kind of maintenance routine.

Simply dealing with problems as they arise is ok to begin with, but as time goes by and your blog gets larger, maintenance can quickly become quite a time consuming task and just clearing the spam comments alone could take several hours if not attended to regularly or efficiently using a plugin.

To make that maintenance more manageable, it is best to break the activities down into smaller packages and perhaps focus on one particular element each week.

With that in mind, as a first step, why not have a look at freshening up some of those old posts. As your blogging knowledge, skills and confidence have grown, as will your writing skills and when you look back at old posts, you will in all likelihood find plenty of opportunities for you to improve what was written previously.

Improve the grammar, expand the content, and even add a few extra links if you can.  Good content is the key to increasing traffic and ultimately being able to monetize your blog.
